A few years ago I stepped off a plane in Japan for the first time.
Like a lot of visitors, I had watched the videos, skimmed the travel guides, and bookmarked restaurants. I had a general idea of where I wanted to go.
What I wasn’t prepared for was everything in between.
How do you politely hand someone your credit card? Should you bow? What do you say when you walk into a restaurant? Why does everyone seem to know exactly where to stand on the train platform?
None of these moments were difficult. They were simply unfamiliar.
The funny thing is that these little interactions became some of my favorite memories of the trip. Every time I managed to order lunch in Japanese, thank a shop owner correctly, or recognize a sign without reaching for Google Translate, I felt a little less like a tourist and a little more connected to the place I was visiting.
When I got home, I kept thinking about that feeling.
Most Japanese learning apps are designed to teach the language. Travel guides are designed to help you find attractions.
I wanted something that lived in the space between those two.
That’s why I built Arrive Japan.
It isn’t trying to make you fluent. It’s designed to help you enjoy your trip more.
The app teaches the Japanese you’ll actually hear while traveling, explains common cultural situations, helps you recognize signs, and lets you practice through quick games that fit into a few spare minutes. Whether you’re checking into a hotel, ordering ramen, navigating a train station, or visiting a shrine, the goal is simple: help those moments feel familiar before you arrive.
Building Arrive Japan also gave me an excuse to revisit one of my favorite countries from my desk. Every feature reminded me of a station I got lost in, a meal I still think about, or a small interaction with someone who was patient while I stumbled through my Japanese.
I hope it gives future travelers a little more confidence and maybe encourages them to step just a bit further outside their comfort zone.
Japan rewarded every bit of curiosity I brought with me. I hope this app helps you experience a little more of that.
